The Mercers’ Hall

The project required the refurbishment of both the ceremonial and administrative entrances to the Mercers’ Hall. In doing so, the building’s circulation at ground level was rationalised and as a consequence the experience for staff and visitors alike was enhanced.

Chapman Architects were responsible for the project from feasibility through to completion, having performed the role of architects, project managers, contract administrators and interior designers. The project was carried out over multiple phases to accommodate a busy schedule of events in the hall.

To brief was to improve access into and around the building, to provide a more welcoming reception to the administrative areas of Mercers’ Hall and to alter the ceremonial entrance stair and lift to satisfy DDA requirements.

This was achieved through selective demolition, careful remodelling of the vertical circulation and the insertion of extensive oak joinery elements. The alterations reflect the high quality of existing craftsmanship found in the Hall and respect the historical character of the building whilst presenting a contemporary face for the Mercers’ Company.
